In cases such as this, you really need to do your research when you receive an e-mail like this one. Be wary of scams when it involves your PayPal account and your money. When I received this e-mail, I looked up the sweepstakes in online-sweepstakes.com and sweepsadvantage.com to make sure that I had, in fact, entered. I also went directly to my Paypal account, and, lo and behold, there was $10!

I tend to do all of my instant wins at "odd" times of the day - early morning or late at night when I think that fewer people might be playing and I might have a better chance of winning. What are Sweepstakes?

I have never addressed this question because I always thought that it was self-explanatory. However, it seems that many people have a misunderstanding of what sweepstakes are and what we as sweepstakers do.

I began thinking about this today when I was on the phone with my father and he referred to it as my “online gambling.” This got me thinking… how many people actually understand what I mean when I say that I am a sweepstaker? I don’t think many do. Just the other day I had a fellow blogger tell me that he does not enter online sweepstakes because he does not have enough money. I was puzzled as to why he believed that sweepstaking costs money. For all of you who came across this blog and are interested in getting started in a hobby that actually pays you back, please read on.

What are Sweepstakes?
Sweepstakes are promotions offered by companies as a means of marketing that generates enthusiasm and awareness for a product or service. Whether the prize is related to the brand or not, the sweepstakes generates an awareness for the sponsor of the sweepstakes. For example, visiting AE.com to enter their Spring Break 08 Sweepstakes may not lead to you actually making a purchase of American Eagle apparel, but it just might. Either way, the company is generating traffic to its website and raising brand awareness. This is the purpose of sweepstakes.

Sweepstakes vs. Contests
Sweepstakes are drawings in which the winner is selected in a random drawing among all entrants. Contests, on the other hand, are skill-based (i.e. photo contests, recipe contests, etc).

Deciding Which Sweepstakes to Enter
The question I get most from new sweepstakers or those who ask about my hobby is, “How do I know they’re not going to scam me?” My general rule is to use your best judgment. Does the website look legitimate? Is it completely free? If all else fails, enter only for those companies that you have heard of. For example, my HDTV was a win from ESPN – an obviously reputable company. I have also won from Kraft, KFC, Gatorade, FedEx, etc.

Costs
The general rule of thumb is that if any sweepstakes requires you to pay anything (including shipping & handling, etc) then it is not a real, legitimate sweepstakes. The only reason you will ever have to pay on your sweepstakes winnings is on taxes at the end of the year.

Filling Forms with RoboForm

I've often gotten this question from non-sweepstakers and new sweepstakers: "Don't you get tired of filling out all those forms?" If I had to manually type my information for every sweepstake I enter then my answer would be a resounding yes. However, I use RoboForm... a sweepstakers dream.

What is RoboForm?
RoboForm is a password filler and (more importantly to us sweepstakers) a form filler. With this program, you can completely fill out an entire form's worth of information with the push of one button. When you download the program, you fill in your personal informantion (name, address, phone number, birthdate, etc... the usual sweepstakes form fields), and RoboForm saves them in a profile for you. When you arrive at a form such as this one at Woman's Day, simply click the button on the RoboForm toolbar for your profile and the form is completely filled out. All you need to do is press "send."

Benefits to Sweepers
The obvious benefit of using RoboForm is to keep you from going crazy from typing your personal information over and over and over again. Consequently, this means that you are able to enter more sweepstakes each day... and that means using RoboForm could potentially double, triple, or quadruple your wins.

When I first started sweeping I entered about 25 sweepstakes and wondered how anyone could ever do this for a prolonged period of time. My fingers were going numb and I was bored out of my mind. Earlier this month I was notified by e-mail that I had won treats from Barking Mad that I had won through a Modern Dog Magazine monthly sweepstakes. (ARV: $6.55)

They showed up this week and I couldn't be happier with this win! I won them for my small dog, Jersey, and he absolutely loves them! They smell like real beef jerky, so I was very impressed with that. They are very crunchy, so it takes a while for my little dog to get finished with one of them. Of course, right after he does he's back begging for more!

This was my first-ever sweepstakes entry with Modern Dog Magazine, and I was a winner! Needless to say, I will return.

Search & Win Sweepstakes

The internet is responsible for many new methods of sweepstaking and the "search & win" is one of them. These are a version of the instant win sweepstakes where you are able to win prizes simply by using a search engine for your daily searches.

Limbo: A New Breed of Sweepstaking

Limbo (limbo.com) is a new breed of sweepstaking. With Limbo, you don't simply enter your information into a form field like most sweepstakes. This website offers two games - Unique and Grab. With unique, you must pick the lowest unique number (the lowest number that no one else has picked) in order to win the prize. With the Grab game, you must press a button to "grab" the item longer than anyone else in order to get the prize. Sounds simple, right? Limbo has become very popular lately, so when you begin to play on limbo.com, it can be very daunting. You might ask yourself, "How can I possibly get the lowest unique number with everyone else guessing?!"

I can say for a fact that people DO win on Limbo. I am one of them! At the end of 2006, I won a check for $4,500 through Limbo playing Unique. In fact, some other lucky Limbo winners and I were showcased on the local news station for our great wins! You can see the news segment here:

Where to Find Sweepstakes

You could very well spend hours scouring the internet looking for sweepstakes to enter, but there are websites out there now that do that for you. These are my favorites and the ones I visit each day:

Perhaps the best feature of these websites are their forums. Each of these forums has a section where the members post their wins, and it is a great way to keep yourself motivated while sweepstaking. Every sweepstaker has his or her moment(s) where they feel like they're just not winning anything or that it just isn't possible. Browsing the forums will keep you motivated, and the most rewarding thing is when you get to post your own wins!
